CNN —Mitch McConnell has bowed to political reality and announced that he is relinquishing his role as leader of Senate Republicans. (Chao served as transportation secretary under former President Donald Trump, before quitting the post following the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.) The anti-Trump coalition within the Republican Party is small and hanging on by a thread, and there is little chance of that changing in the short term. Now, one of Haley’s most generous benefactors, the conservative political action committee Americans for Prosperity, funded by the Koch network, has withdrawn its funds. And now, like other Trump opponents, Romney finds himself heading for the exit at the end of his current term.

Nikki Haley may have lost one of her deep-pocketed donors in the Koch brothers-backed political network, but New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu thinks she can still attract the dollars necessary to prevent a second Trump presidency. "With [Haley] at the top of the ticket, Republicans win up and down the ballot," Sununu told CNBC's Last Call on Monday. "Trump raises money for his legal costs. Last month, the former South Carolina governor brought in $16.5 million. We want winners," Sununu said.

He fought hard in state after state, even as the front-runner amassed a delegate advantage that would be virtually impossible to overcome. The personnel shake-up follows growing frustration among campaign staffers over the effectiveness – or lack thereof – of the PAC’s spending. “It’s not so good,” Carol Weissert, political science professor at Florida State University, says about the state of the DeSantis campaign. The political branch of the powerful Koch network is facing scrutiny as operatives chafe against a decision to endorse Nikki Haley for president that many see as out of step with their values. A day later, Maidment was "terminated" from the organization, he said, and he told NBC News that he is not the only one within the Koch-backed group who is disappointed in the Haley endorsement. As the group started to see public criticism from those with ties to AFP, Seidel sent some AFP leaders an email about the overall response. Struggling to energize his campaign, DeSantis this week privately encouraged his donor network to support a newly formed super PAC that's taking over advertising responsibilities. The super PAC has also paid for the bulk of his TV ads and almost all of his organizing. On Aug. 8, the DeSantis campaign announced a staff shakeup, replacing its campaign manager and hiring Polyansky from the super PAC to serve as deputy campaign manager. Polyansky is an Iowa campaign veteran who has worked on several presidential campaigns in the state. DeSantis spokesman Andrew Romeo said it was “totally false” to assert that DeSantis coordinated any campaign strategy with the super PAC.

NEW YORK (AP) — Americans for Prosperity, the political arm of the powerful Koch network, formally endorsed Nikki Haley's presidential campaign on Tuesday, promising to commit its nationwide army of activists — and virtually unlimited funds — to helping Haley defeat former President Donald Trump in the GOP primary contest. In a statement, DeSantis spokesman Andrew Romeo likened the Koch endorsement to a contribution to the Trump campaign. “Every dollar spent on Nikki Haley’s candidacy should be reported as an in-kind to the Trump campaign. Haley on Tuesday said she was "honored" to have earned the endorsement from Americans for Prosperity Action. The DeSantis campaign has argued that Haley has no path to the GOP nomination, but no other candidate — including DeSantis — has been able to overtake Trump in polling in any of the early-nominating states. The support from Americans for Prosperity Action will now give Haley critical financial and organizational help in the lead-up to Iowa and New Hampshire.

Nikki Haley is instructive. But nowhere does it talk in depth about policy or what the Koch brothers’ organization represents within the Republican coalition. What makes Haley interesting in this race is not, in fact, her position in the polls but her position in the party. Haley was, after all, Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, an interesting position for someone who so sharply diverges from Trump’s ostensibly non-interventionist foreign policy. Or maybe it’s Haley, the standard-bearer for a more inclusive Republican Party, defined by her identities as a woman and Indian-American.
